Engagement Party
My beautiful older sister (see above) recently got engaged to this gentleman trying to steal her pizza. Although once they get marred they may need to learn to share better, they truly deserved the grand celebration we threw to mark their engagement. Stay tuned for links to the recipes we prepared, and as always, photos of our guests digging into the food and getting into party mode.

Recipe: Berry Crisp with Yogurt/Whipped Cream
For a red white and blue dessert stunner to top off our fourth festivities we adapted the Summer Berry Crisp recipe from PARADE magazine. Our new improved pie cut out a huge amount of sugar, berries are sweet already, remember? The berry mixture we chose for our recipe was based on what we had in the fridge—feel free to experiment with different fruit and amounts. Our pie turned out so...
New Recipes: Baked Beans and Potato Salad
Not going to lie, I personally am not the world’s biggest Baked Beans fan. I think (or at least, used to think) that they were a little too heavy for summer picnic/BBQ fare and frankly, rather socially unacceptable. But, when Barbara and I cut the extra sugar and meat, added more spice and veg, and let them cook for a little extra time, I’ll call myself a Baked Beans Convert....

New Recipe: Mushroom Quinoa Burgers
We adapted a Martha Stewart recipe for Veggie Burgers from http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/veggie-burgers. Although the recipe was already packed with yummy healthy food, we don’t like to do things half-assed so we cut out even more of the crap (we nixed the egg, cut back on cheese and bread crumbs, substituted english muffins for buns, amped up the mushrooms, and decreased the...

BURGERS
At our party last weekend, we knew one thing was a non-negotiable: BURGERS. Just in case you’ve been living on McDonald’s and aren’t up on the health news, burgers are often linked with clogging up the ol’ pipes and keeping you refilling your Prevacid Rx. So, how did we succeed so intensely at making burgers that didn’t taste like a weird amalgamation of tire...

Party Kitty
We had an unexpected, but well received guest at our Fourth of July party. Even towards the end of the night, it is crucial to be prepared to feed one more hungry mouth a healthy meal. A little orange stray kitten wandered in, chilled for an hour, drank some milk, and then sauntered off to a party down the street with an older more distinguished crowd. He is obviously both a huge player and a...

(Pre) 4th of July Party
Since we all are way too popular (which is obvious by the sheer number of times my roomie, see hottie above in the USA cap, appears in my photos to compensate for my lack of friends) and therefore too busy to throw a Fourth of July party on the real holiday—this week we decided to celebrate our country a little bit early. No Fourth of July party would be complete without burgers, potato...
Jackie's Eating Diary--Spanish Tapas in Madrid
Yes, I did what I wanted this weekend and wound up in Spain. If you are feeling particularly jealous, my flight home included enough crying babies to fill the city of Valencia, a passenger plague of Black Lung, and an uncomfortable seat in row 43 of a 43-row plane.
I have this “condition” that I have self-diagnosed (ask Barbara, I do this a lot…) called Plate Envy. What...
Dinosaur Party
This week my new roommate moved in and we decided to throw a dinosaur-themed party in her honor. We even made a rocking dinosaur pinata (and no, there are no tiny bottles of booze in this pinata, take it from someone who knows, you don’t want a flood of booze and shards of broken plastic on your floor the next morning). Why dinos? Well because we live in Brooklyn and if there is one...
Jackie's Italian Eating Diary: Parmigiano Reggiano
I’m not going to judge, so I just want to throw out this question and see how many answers I get: When’s the last time you had a Cheeto? I mean, really, a bag of Cheetos? And when you ate it, did you feel: a.) hungover, b.) like that vending machine ripped you off, c.) like a cheap date or d.) all of the above? Did you ALSO feel like you could have done BETTER to satisfy that...

Jackie's Italian Eating Diary: Firenze Gelato...
Have you ever noticed that whenever people get back from some place remotely cultured they bitch and moan about how “fat” they’ve gotten and play the blame-game with whatever the local specialty is? Well, that is downright imbecilic. The truth is, no matter where in the world you are, you will gain weight if you over-indulge on vacation. Period. Plus, there is something about...
Jackie's Italian Eating Diary...THE NEGRONI

THE NEGRONI

New Recipe: Shredded Tilapia Fish Tacos

Friday Night = TACO NIGHT
Chugging margaritas, stuffing your face with tacos and playing a round of drunken Big Buck Hunter at the dive bar nearby may seem like a one way ticket to chubbsville and regrettable hipster hookups. But we refuse to give up any of the above pleasures. So here we go, revamping your taco night to include plenty of good stuff while still keeping the fiesta alive…
